Distant targets are worth more points than close targets. The shapes of the targets determine their overall score: triangles are worth the most; they’re usually hidden or visible for only a short amount of time. Diamonds are the second most valuable targets, followed by squares. Circles are worth the least amount; they’re the closest to the car and the most common, but you need to hit 100 of them to equal one hit on a diamond. They’re good for small children, but if you’re interested in generating a high score, aim for the tougher targets. You’ll score more in the long run.
The Space Ranger Spin contains several secret targets that can deliver up to 10 times the score of even the triangle targets. Look for them outside the Box-o-Bot’s right hand, underneath Zurg’s ship, on the hanging claw after the Box-o-Bot, the top of the volcano, on the chest of the moving Zurgs, and at the “Zurg Escapes” part of the ride on either side of the entrance.
You can score on a given target multiple times; every time you hit it with your blaster ray, it registers another score. If you’ve hit a tough one, keeping aiming for it until you move out of range. This is especially true during times when the ride stops (either because of a breakdown or because the ride operator is helping a handicapped rider get on or off). If your car stops moving, pick the most valuable target you can and keep shooting at it until the car starts up again. You’ll get a huge amount of points very quickly.
The Space Ranger Spin lists the day’s highest scores at the end of the ride. If you want to get your score on that list, play the percentages. Go on the ride early in the day, right after the park has opened when fewer competitors have taken their shot at it. If you’re staying at one of the Disney World hotels, you’ll have access to the park one hour before it opens to the public.
