Things to Do in Rising Sun, Indiana

Rising Sun is a small community located in Ohio County in southeastern Indiana. It is approximately 95 minutes away from the state capital, Indianapolis, and 45 minutes away from Cincinnati, Ohio. Despite its size, the town is home to a number of cultural and recreational institutions and restaurants, several of which are part of a prominent resort.
  1. Cultural Institutions

    • Art buffs should stop in at the Pendleton Art Center, where more than 20 artists work in a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture and ceramics. The center features a variety of temporary exhibitions, and new exhibitions are unveiled during the first weekend of every month. At the Ohio County Historical Museum, which is on the Register of Historic Places, racing aficionados can admire record-setter J. W. Whitlock's race boat and the trophies he won with it. Farming equipment produced by the Clore Plow Works factory in the late 19th century are also on view. For a different cultural experience, visit Harps on Main, where you can take a self-guided tour and watch how the instruments are made.

    Outdoor Activities

    • For an outdoor experience, see the forests, valleys and ravines of Rising Sun from the unique vantage points afforded by the Dagaz Acres Zip Line Eco-Adventure Course. Dagaz Acres offers five dual zip lines, two canopy zip lines and a Burma Bridge. View vineyards and orchards by taking a drive along the Ohio River Scenic Byway, which passes through Rising Sun. Students and youth groups can also take advantage of the educational programming at the Denver Siekman Environmental Park.

    Recreation

    • According to the Ohio County Economic Development Corporation, the Grand Victoria Casino & Resort draws 2 million visitors every year, making it one of the main go-to places for diversion in Rising Sun. If you are feeling lucky, head to the Grand Victoria Casino & Resort, which boasts a 40,000 square foot riverboat casino that offers both table and machine games. From March 30 through the month of November, visitors can take in a game of golf at the18-hole, 6,400-yard course at The Links.

    • Visitors to the Grand Victoria Casino & Resort can feast on steaks or seafood at the Wellington's Steakhouse or pile their plates as high as they want at the River View Buffet, which offers carved meats and Italian dishes. Another fine dining option is Courtyard Fine Food & Spirits, where diners can indulge in steaks, seafood, soups and salads or have drinks and appetizers at the bar. Live entertainment is provided on certain nights.
