Visit the Passports section of the US Department of State's website, or call 877-487-2778 and request a passport renewal. For routine service, which processes your application in four to six weeks, the fee is $110. For expedited service, which can take three weeks or less, depending on your travel needs, the fee is $170, plus overnight shipping costs. If you need your passport replaced immediately, online passport liaisons like ABriggs and US Passport Online can process your application in as little as 24 hours for around $300, plus government fees.
Complete the necessary documents. The DS-82 form, or "US Passport Application by Mail," is required for most adult passport renewals. If your passport was lost or stolen, you will need to submit the DS-11 and DS-64 instead. You can complete all of these forms online at the Department of State's website or other online passport agencies, but you must mail them to the relevant offices. If you wish to keep your old passport, make sure to indicate this on your form.
Mail documents, preferably by FedEx or courier, along with your old passport, two passport pictures, travel information (if applicable) and fees. If you are dealing directly with the Department of State, send your application to:
National Passport Processing Center
PO Box 90155
Philadelphia, PA 19190-0155
Or, for expedited service, mail documents to:
National Passport Processing Center
PO Box 90955
Philadelphia, PA 19190-0955
Independent online passport businesses have their own mailing addresses, which can be obtained online or over the phone. Your new passport will arrive by FedEx or courier, and you may have to sign for it.
Check the status of your application often, either by phone or through your passport agency's website. Pay close attention to the progress of your mail, both to and from the agency. The state department recommends that you use a traceable delivery method to send documents.
