Obtain a passport, if not already issued one. Brazil requires a current U.S. passport for U.S. citizens desiring to travel to Brazil. Contact the U.S. Department of State for information about applying for or renewing a passport.
Determine which visa is needed. The purpose for travel determines the visa type. For example, a tourist visa allows travelers to visit friends and relatives in Brazil, participate in conferences or compete in a sport competition. Several other temporary visa types allow visitors to spend time in Brazil to adopt a child, study as a student or to travel for missionary purposes.
Apply with the Brazilian Consulate General in the appropriate jurisdiction. Complete the application online through the appropriate Brazilian Consulate General's website. Print the application once complete, and take it in person or mail it to the appropriate Brazilian Consulate. Travelers also may apply through a third party, such as a travel agent or an authorized visa service.
Get passport photos taken. Travelers must present a passport-type picture for a Brazilian visa.
Make a copy of the two-way ticket to Brazil. Brazil requires proof that the stay is temporary. Travelers can ask a travel agent to provide a letter on company letterhead. The letter must be signed, and should include the trip itinerary, flight numbers and dates of travel in Brazil.
Provide other documentation as needed. All visa applicants must provide proof of residence in their consulate's jurisdiction, such as a driver's license or utility bills. Other documentation may be required, depending on the visa type and circumstances. Brazil also requires some travelers to provide an International Certificate of Vaccination and/or a Yellow Fever International Certificate. Check the Brazilian Consulate General website for specific visa requirements and whether an International Certificate of Vaccination and/or a Yellow Fever International Certificate is necessary.
Pay the required fees. Fee amounts vary, depending on the type of visa. Check the appropriate Brazilian consulate's website for current fees.
Pick up the visa in person at your Brazilian consulate or send a third party with valid ID. Once the Brazilian consulate receives the application, documentation and fees, a visa is issued within four to 10 days. However, several factors can affect processing times -- check the consulate's website for current processing times.
