How to Get a Greek Visa

Always dreamed of lying on the white sand beaches of a Greek island or scrambling over the dusty stones of the Acropolis? Well, good news. If you are citizen of the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Japan, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland or any country in the European Union, you can visit and stay in Greece for up to 90 days without a visa. But if three months isn't enough for you or you hail from a country not listed above, here are the steps you'll need to take to obtain a Greek visa.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure you have a valid passport. Your passport should be valid for three months beyond the period you intend to stay in Greece, so Greek officials will know that you are entitled to re-enter into your country once the visa expires.

    • 2

Obtain a recent photo of yourself. The photo should be passport-sized (two inches by two inches) and in color.

    • 3

Gather proof that you have sufficient funds to stay in Greece for the length of your visa. Be prepared to show copies of bank accounts or other financial statements. You may also submit a letter from a sponsor, such as a parent, who can give a detailed explanation and proof of how you would be financially supported during your time in Greece.

    • 4

Obtain proof that you have somewhere to stay in Greece. Written evidence of a hotel reservation or a letter that states you are participating in group travel will suffice. If you are staying in a private home, you should have your host write a signed and notarized letter of invitation that makes clear you will be their guest.

    • 5

Obtain letters of reference from an employer, or if you are applying for a student visa, from your university.

    • 6

Submit all of your documents, along with a completed visa application form to the Consulate of Greece in your jurisdiction. Be prepared to pay a visa filing fee between $20 to $45.

    • 7

Go to the Consulate of Greece to have the visa stamped into your passport once your application is approved. Typically it takes four to 10 days for the visa to be processed and issued. If you don't hear from the Consulate after 10 days, contact them to check on your status.
