Houston is the largest city in the state of Texas and one of its most diverse. It is home to the largest Vietnamese population in Texas, two Chinatowns and a large gay population. Houston's museum district includes a number of exhibits and cultural institutions, while its theater district has year-round resident companies representing all of the major performing arts. Houston's multiculturalism and arts-friendly atmosphere contributes to a year-round calendar of community events.
  1. Houston International Festival

    • The Houston International Festival is an annual celebration of different cultures from around the world. Each year during the first week of May, the festival focuses on a particular culture and all it has to offer in terms of food, art and music. The 16 acres of space used by the festival are made up of a number of live music stages, arts spaces and local food vendors. Profits from the festival go toward funding arts and education programs at schools in the Greater Houston Area.

    Houston Comedy Film Festival

    • The Houston Comedy Film Festival is an annual short-film competition. A total of 20 teams are given a 50-hour period to produce a five-minute comedy film. The results are screened at the festival over three evenings with the public voting for which film wins an audience-choice award.

    Bayou City Art Festival

    • The biannual Bayou City Art Festival is held at Memorial Park in the spring and in downtown Houston during the fall. The festival was started in 1971 as a community arts-and-crafts celebration. As well as showcasing work by both local and international artists, the festival has stages for performance pieces, walkabout artists, interactive pieces, craft work, food vendors and music. All profits from the festival are used for local nonprofit organizations.

    Houston Cinema Arts Society Festival

    • The Houston Cinema Arts Society runs an annual festival devoted to showcasing the city's creative talent. The festival celebrates innovative mixed-media performances, outdoor projections, interactive video installations and cutting-edge cinema. Over 6,000 people attended the 34 events and screenings of the 2009 festival. Houston Cinema Arts Society Festival usually happens in November.
