How to Obtain a Training Visa in Japan

Trainees are foreign students or student-aged workers serving internships of six months to one year in Japan, learning technical or skilled work at a company. The training program must consist of both on-the-job training and classroom lectures. Trainees cannot receive a salary, but companies may cover housing and living expenses while in Japan. At the end of training, students are expected to return to their countries of origin.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask your university or place of employment to send you to Japan for training. You will need a "sender" organization to receive the trainee visa.

    • 2

Apply to Japanese companies as a trainee. Once you have been accepted by a Japanese company, the company will become your "sponsor" throughout the rest of your visa process.

    • 3

Ask your Japanese sponsor to obtain a certificate of eligibility for you. You may obtain the information for this certificate at the Japanese-language immigration website, www.immi-moj.go.jp. Instead of a certificate of eligibility, you may submit with your application these items: a training plan, schedule, invitation letter from your sponsor, your educational qualification, the sender's business information, the trainer's qualifications and the sponsor's business license, along with one photocopy of each document.

    • 4

Fill out the correct visa application provided by your local Japanese embassy or consular office.

    • 5

Take one passport-sized photo at a photo processing center to attach to your application.

    • 6

Drop off your application with attached photo, original passport and certificate of eligibility or supporting documents as described above. As of April 2010, this is a free visa.

    • 7

Allow at least four days for the Japanese embassy to review your application before picking up your visa.
