Plum Creek Park is located in Walnut Grove and boasts 70 campsites for tents, with electric and water service options. This scenic campground has a hiking path around Lake Laura, a nine-hole frisbee disc course, playground equipment, two bathhouses, a lakeside gazebo and opportunities to view wildlife. Campers can also enjoy the hiking path along Plum Creek and a walking tour to view trees of many varieties. The campground is not difficult to locate, but visitors who need to get specific directions or to reserve a site should call beforehand. Reservations are taken for June, July and August.

Not far from Walnut Grove in Currie, Minnesota, Schreier's on Shetek Campground welcomes families. The large, family-owned campground is located on the shores of Lake Shetek and has 170 tenting, electric and full hookup sites. This country campground with wide roads for vehicles has separate sites for weekend and seasonal campers. Sites can accommodate RVs, fifth wheels, travel trailers and pop-ups. Bath houses, flushing toilets, playground equipment and picnic areas are available for campers.

Camping close to Walnut Grove can also be found in the nearby city of Sanborn, Minnesota. Sailors and Soldiers Memorial Park is a local campground that offers 24 campsites with water and 50-amp electric services. Primitive tent camping is also available and the restrooms and showers are handicap-accessible. A camper dumpsite is located in the park. When not enjoying nearby attractions such as Laura Ingalls Wilder's home in Walnut Grove, families can enjoy playground equipment and a volleyball court.
