Nevada Campgrounds

Camping opportunities abound in Nevada, but campers have to choose their level of comfort. Hundreds of sites offer no hookups and sometimes not even water and may be located down gravel roads in remote areas. These are government sites that probably are free of charge. Campers who prefer the high level of comfort offered by recreational vehicles should stick to RV campgrounds near big cities such as Las Vegas and Reno.
  1. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Campground

    • The U.S. Bureau of Land Management operates the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area about 20 miles southwest of Las Vegas. The campground offers primitive camping at 22 car sites and five walk-in sites; backpack camping also is permitted, the BLM says. Picnic tables and grills are available. The campground also has water and toilets but no hookups, so RVs need to be self-contained. The area gets its name from the sandstone cliffs that dot the Mojave Desert, making it a popular spot for rock climbers. The campground is two miles east of the visitor center.

    Washoe Lake State Park

    • Washoe Lake State Park, between Carson City and Reno, has 49 campsites with picnic tables, grills and fire rings. Shade is provided at some sites, and restrooms and showers are available. The Nevada Division of Parks says some sites can handle RVs up to 45 feet long, but there are no hookups. Reservations are not accepted for this campground, which provides views of the Sierra Nevada and Canyon mountain ranges. The park also has a boat launch, horseback riding trails and interpretive displays.

    Nevada Beach Campground

    • Nevada Beach Campground, operated by the U.S. Forest Service, is on the east shore of Lake Tahoe. It offers 54 sites, some of which are close to the lake. The campground, open from May 15 to October 15, has picnic tables, grills and toilets. Because bears are frequent visitors to the campground, the Forest Service provides bear-proof containers for campers to use for food storage. A campground host is on site.

    Hi-Desert RV

    • Campers who enjoy their creature comforts, such as hookups, are likely to head for one of Nevada's private RV parks. One such park is Hi-Desert RV in Winnemucca. The RV park offers full-service hookups for RVs and also has sites available for tent campers, its website notes. It also has showers, Internet access, cable TV, a convenience store, recreation center, laundry, heated pool, putting green, dog runs and a koi pond.
