The140-acre Wild Horse State Recreation Area is north of Elko along State Route 225 and borders the northeastern shore of the Wild Horse Reservoir. There are 33 camping sites available and each site has a camp pad, fire pit and picnic table. Restrooms are available and open year round, while showers, a dump station and water faucets are centrally located but only open during the summer months. Boaters will find a boat ramp providing easy access to the reservoir and a nearby beach area is open for day use. Visitors may bring their pets, which must be on a leash at all times. Picnic areas each have a fire pit and picnic table and have a view of the reservoir. The Recreation Area offers year round fishing, and ice fishing is popular in the winter months. In addition to swimming, there are a variety of trails for hiking and observing the high desert climate, vegetation and bird life.

Southeast of Elko, within the Humbold-Toiyabe National Forest, the Thomas Canyon Campground sits at 7,600 feet elevation and has 40 campsites. Located in Lamoille Canyon this campground is surrounded by high cliffs and shaded by the many cottonwood trees in the area. Campsites have access to drinking water and restrooms. There are fire pits and grills as well as garbage facilities. The Thomas Canyon trail leads out of the camp area and is a self-guided nature trail for hikers. Fishing is permitted, as is horseback riding. There are over 40 established, mostly bolted, rock-climbing routes to experience. The campground is open from June through September and requires reservations no less than 4 days in advance of arrival.

The Angel Creek Campground, located at an elevation of 6,200 feet northwest of Elko has 18 RV and tent campsites. While considered a developed campground, this is a rustic camp without electricity, water or sewer hookups. The campground provides restrooms and firewood, while potable water and a dump station are available at the Flying J Truck Stop in Wells. Towering aspens throughout the campground provide shelter for most sites. Activities include hiking on trail heads leading into the Humboldt Wilderness, as well as fishing and hunting. Call ahead for reservations at least 4 days prior to arrival.
