Campgrounds in Shelter Cove, Calif.

Shelter Cove is a tiny fishing village that is on the Pacific Ocean in the area of northern California known as the Lost Coast. It's called the Lost Coast because the terrain is so rugged the only highway in the area had to built 30 miles inland. Camping options around Shelter Cove are limited, although there is one in town and two more in the surrounding King Range National Conservation Area.
  1. Shelter Cove Campground

    • The only campground in Shelter Grove itself, the Shelter Cove Campground is not fancy, but it offers guests a great view of the Pacific Ocean. The Shelter Cove Campground has 100 campsites, including many that can accommodate RVs. These come with water, sewer and electric hook-ups. Each site also has its own picnic table and fire pit. In the middle of the campground is a general store. This area also contains restrooms, showers and a laundry facility. A boat launch ramp and a store that sells fishing gear are within walking distance.

    King Range National Conservation Area - Wailaka Campground

    • The Wailaka Campground in the King Range National Conservation Area is based out of Whitehorn, 13 miles east of Shelter Cove. Offering a reasonable camping fee of $8 as of the spring in 2010, the Wailaka Campground has 13 no-frills sites that can accommodate tents or trailers. All sites are equipped with fire pits, vault toilets and picnic tables. Primitive sites with no hook-ups are available. Numerous hiking trails can be found near the campground, which is in a 64,000-acre park of coastal wilderness. The King Range is also a popular area for wildlife watching. Nearly 300 species of birds have been seen, including spotted owls, bald eagles, and coopers hawks.

    King Range National Conservation Area - Nadelos Campground

    • The Nadelos Campground in the Whitehorn area is part of the mammoth King Range National Conservation Area, which has over 70 miles of hiking trails that extend from the beach to the park's highest peaks. The Nadelos Campground has eight sites that come with picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets. No hook-ups are available. The entire campground can also be reserved by groups that number at least 20 and no more that 60. The campground is not available for groups on holiday weekends during the summer. All kinds of wildlife can be found in this area, including a large herd of elk.
