Mount Rushmore National Monument Area Campgrounds

Mount Rushmore, in the southwest corner of South Dakota, is a world-famous monument with the faces of U.S. presidents Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Lincoln, from left to right. The famous sculpture is just a half-hour drive from Rapid City, South Dakota, so it is a popular tourist attraction, especially during the summer months. Campers will find plenty to do in the area.
  1. Things to Do

    • Mount Rushmore is obviously an impressive sight, with the massive sculpture of the presidents providing a dramatic illustration of American history. When visitors have taken their pictures, they can learn a bit about the history of the monument at a small museum near the base of the mountain and pick up souvenirs at the on-site gift shop.

Those looking to stretch their legs will find a short hiking trail that runs in front of the sculpture, providing unique views, and longer trails in the surrounding area. The much larger Crazy Horse sculpture, though still under construction, is a short drive from the monument.

    Planning

    • Before campers hit the road, they should plan carefully how they want to spend their time. To begin, although there is plenty of camping in the area, there are no sites inside the monument's borders. This means that campers will likely need to bring their car and pay to park before entering, as other visitors must do. Campers should also keep a close eye on the weather, as South Dakota's winters can be punishing, and cold nights can be found well into spring and in early autumn.

    Keystone

    • Keystone is the closest city to Mount Rushmore, so many campers choose to make this their base of operations. The city has eateries and stores to pick up supplies, with camping available on the outskirts. Two possibilities include Kemp's Kamp, on Old City Road, and Spokane Creek Cabins and Campground, on Iron Mountain Road. Both have heated pools, shaded camp sites and cabins as well.

    Rapid City

    • Rapid City is just a half hour by car to Mount Rushmore, so many may find it easier to camp around this larger city, for it has more amenities. There are numerous campgrounds in the areas just outside the city's built-up downtown. Some of the closest to town include the Lazy J RV Park and Campground, the Rapid City KOA Kampground and Lake Park Campground-Cottages.

    Crazy Horse

    • The Crazy Horse Mountain Memorial is a sculpture even larger than Mount Rushmore, but because it is not as well-known, it doesn't get as many visitors. It is just over a 20-minute drive from Mount Rushmore, which makes it a close option for visitors who want to escape some of the crowds. Custer, South Dakota, is the nearest town, with campgrounds including Echo Valley Park Campground‎ and Fort Welikit Family Campground.
