Western Florida Campgrounds

Western Florida can refer to the panhandle part of the state or to the main portion of the state near the Gulf Coast. Either way, most of these campgrounds usually involve water in some way, whether they are on the Gulf of Mexico or inland in areas with swamps, rivers and lakes. The state features a wide variety of campgrounds in Western Florida that are in both public and private parks.
  1. Peace River Campground

    • The Peace River Campground encompasses 165 acres along the Peace River in the Arcadia area, which is approximately 50 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico. It has full hook-up pull-through RV sites, tent sites with water and electric, and primitive sites in remote areas where you can pitch your tent anywhere you want. Restrooms with showers and a dump station are located on a property with a heated pool, camp store, dance hall, restaurant and an area where you can store your RV. Canoes and golf carts can be rented, and guests are allowed to bring their own ATVs. Daily, monthly, yearly and group rates are all available at Peace River, which also has a fishing pond, picnic areas, playgrounds and animals around the park.

    Oscar Scherer State Park

    • Situated south of the Tampa area, the Oscar Scherer State Park has 15 miles of trails that wind through scrubby pine forests not far from the coast. These trails provide hiking, bicycling, and wildlife viewing opportunities, while canoeists and kayakers can take advantage of South Creek, a stream that flows into to the Gulf of Mexico and offers both saltwater and freshwater fishing. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent. The park's campground has sites that accommodate tents and RVs up to 36 feet. The campsites, which come with electric and water connections, picnic tables and grills, are located next to five restrooms with showers and laundry facilities. A guided canoe boat tour and and swimming at the beach along Lake Osprey are some more popular activities.

    Topsail Hill Preserve State Park

    • A popular destination on Florida's Panhandle, the Topsail Hill Preserve State Park features 3.2 miles of sandy beaches with dunes over 25 feet tall along the Gulf Coast. Fishing is allowed from the shoreline as well as in the park's lake. A tram service is available from the campground to the beach, while the RV portion of the park has a swimming pool and shuffleboard courts. Cabins can also be rented on a weekly basis at a park that has a store that sells camping items, snacks and drinks. Topsail Hill has 156 RV sites with that come with, sewer, cable TV and electric connections of either 30 or 50 amps. Bathrooms, showers and laundry facilities are located at the campground, which also has 22 sites for tent camping that have fire rings as well as water and electric hook-ups.
