How to Store a Ladder on an SUV Roof Rack

Whether you have a six foot or a 10 foot ladder, you can safely store and transfer your ladder on your SUV as long as you have roof racks. Generally, roof racks come standard on all SUVs. If you do not have a truck, placing a ladder on the SUV roof rack is an ideal way to store or transport your ladder. After all, the SUV roof racks were designed to hold large objects in place on the roof. As long as you make sure the ladder is properly secured in place, you should have no problems.

Things You'll Need

  • Ladder
  • Bungee cords or ratchet tie down straps
  • Small chain with lock
  • Red flag

Instructions

    • 1

Place the ladder on top of the SUV roof rack.

    • 2

Tie down and secure the ladder with bungee cords or ratchet tie down straps. The ratchet straps may have an advantage as they provide more security and safety. Make sure you secure the ladder to all of the rails on the roof rack. There will be side rails on both sides of the ladder as well as middle racks under the ladder. There is no limit on how many bungee cords or ratchet tie down straps you have to use, but you should use at least two straps per side to secure the ladder.

    • 3

Place a small chain and lock around your ladder and SUV rack. This chain and lock will not only secure it in place, but also keep it from being stolen.

    • 4

Tie a red flag on the back end of your ladder to warn any drivers behind you.

    • 5

Check all tie downs to ensure they are properly tight and secure. Listen and pay attention to the roof and ladder while driving the SUV to your destination.
