Events in Northern Michigan

The northern Michigan area is also referred to as the Upper Peninsula, or U.P. Visitors to this area find indoor and outdoor activities for the whole family, for every season. Boating and camping are favorite summer hobbies, while the winter months bring fresh snow for snowmobile riders. Festivals are abundant in Northern Michigan and entertain thousands of visitors with music, games and attractions.
  1. Arts and Crafts Show

    • Each year, the Mackinaw Area Visitors Bureau hosts an arts and crafts show for crafters from all around the country. Displays attract both kids and adults and include paintings, woodwork, jewelry and clothing. The show is normally held on a weekend at the end of August and lasts for two days.

    Labor Day Bridge Walk

    • The annual Labor Day Bridge Walk is also held in the Mackinaw area. Each year since 1958, people have walked the five-mile Mackinac Bridge. Normally, pedestrian traffic is prohibited on the bridge, but an exception is made for this event. The procession is traditionally led by the current Michigan governor.

    H.O.G. Rally Michigan

    • Escanaba hosts the H.O.G. Rally, a Harley-Davidson owners' gathering at the U.P. State Fairground. This weekend event boasts attractions, music and entertainment, all in a picturesque landscape. The event encourages attendants to take a ride through scenic areas, including Pictured Rocks Waterfall and the Garden Peninsula.

    Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race

    • This annual sled dog race is held every winter and attracts visitors from all over the U.P. area. Events held at the Tahquamenon Dog Race include the Pro-class race, the eight-dog Pro, the six-dog Sportsman race, six-dog Purebreed class, four-dog Sport race and the Skijoring event. Spectators can watch mushers race their team of dogs for the win in tracks more than 63 miles long.

    Marquette Area Blues Fest

    • In 2003, the Marquette Area Blues Society was established, and with that an annual blues festival was created. This event is held in the Marquette area at Mattson Lower Harbor Park in the downtown district. Visitors can browse though various vendor displays and be entertained by music and workshops.

    Grand Marais Triathlon

    • The Grand Marais Triathlon is an event annually held in downtown Grand Marais. The event features a triathlon for youth and adults, where kids from the ages of five to 15 can participate in a 100-yard water leg, a 1/4-mile bike and a 1/4-mile run. Adults are challenged in a 300-yard swim in Grand Marais Bay, a 13.6-mile bike race and a 5K run.
