Camps for Kids With Sensory Processing Disorder

Camps for children with sensory processing disorder, or SPD, can be found throughout the United States. Camps designed to meet the needs of children with disabilities such as SPD and autism provide trained staff and on-call medical care. Parents and caregivers can select camps that run during the summer or year-around weekend programs.
  1. Surfer's Healing Camp

    • The Surfer's Healing Camp operates facilities in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia Beach and California. Parents with an autistic son, who suffered from sensory disorder, founded the camp. Founder Israel Paskowitz was a competitive surfer, who discovered the soothing and joyful impact surfing had upon his young son. Common camp activities include getting comfortable in the ocean through one-on-one assistance from camp trainers and surfing for an afternoon. Campers can sit or stand on surfboards with a camp trainer on back or can advance to learning how to ride the waves on their own. Camps are hosted on weekends throughout the year at various locations.

    Camp NuHop

    • Camp NuHop is in Ashland County, Ohio. The camp offers a residential summer experience for children ages 6 to 18. Many summer camp programs are offered, including excursions to varying outdoor Ohio attractions. "Exploration Camp" for 6- to 8-year-olds focuses on traditional camping experiences such canoeing, swimming, outdoor cooking and hiking. "Wilderness Camp" is geared to children ages 9 to 13 and offers a more in-depth camping experience. "Intro to Sports" teaches athletics in a noncompetitive manner to children ages 8 to 10 years old. Additional summer camp program offerings include a "Science Camp," "Discovery Camp," "Expedition Camp," "Sports Skills Camp," "Acclimatization Camp," "Rails to Trails Camp," "Artistic Ventures Camp," "Lake Erie Island Camp," "Crusoe Self-Reliance Camp," "Aqua Camp," "Canoe Camp," "Mountain Bike Camp," "Let's Explore Ohio Camp" and "Adventure Camp."

    Learning on the Log Camp

    • Learning on the Log Camp in Atlanta offers year-round weekend and after-school camps, outdoor adventure and summer programs. Summer programs include Chattahoochee River rafting outings, swimming and hiking. This camp focuses motor movement, sensory regulation and increasing the self-esteem and independence of campers.

    Camp Courageous

    • Camp Courageous operates a year-round camp and respite care facility in Monticello, Iowa. This 150-acre recreational facility features a swimming pool, hiking trails, arts and crafts, culinary pursuits and special community and noncompetitive sporting events throughout the year.

    Camp Tatiyee

    • Camp Tatiyee is in Lakeside, Arizona, and is sponsored by the Lions Club. Campers participate in artist expression classes, hiking, fishing, campfires, science classes and swimming. Programs are offered throughout the year and provide a dormitory for overnight programs.
