Campgrounds in Covington, Georgia

Covington is a city in the central part of Georgia. It had a population of just under 15,000 in 2008, according to City-data.com. Named after a general in the War of 1812, Covington had the misfortune of being looted by General Sherman's Civil War army during its March to the Sea. Covington has also served as the location site for some major films, including "My Cousin Vinny" and "Remember the Titans.'' The majority of camping sites in the Covington area are at least 10 miles outside of town.
  1. Indian Springs State Park

    • Indian Springs State Park is a 528-acre recreation area approximately 20 miles to the south of Covington. It has 88 sites that can accommodate both tents and RVs. Owned and operated by the state of Georgia, the campground has three sections. Each section has a bath house and laundry facilities. One of the chief attractions of the park is McIntosh Lake, where guests can swim, boat and fish. Campers can also rent boats. There is a sense of history because according to its website, some people consider it the oldest park in the entire nation.

    Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center

    • The Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center is located in Covington itself. An educational facility, it is open year-round and serves over 20,000 campers each year. It has bunk and semi-private lodging. It originally opened as a campground to provide a camping experience for the youth of Georgia, but has evolved into a camping facility that hosts both youth and adult organizations. Many recreational, dining and meeting room facilities are on the grounds. Reservations are required. It is not open to the general public, but does accept groups and individuals who want to attend one of its specific camps.

    Elks Honey Creek Campground

    • The Elks Honey Creek Campground is 10 miles east of Covington in Conyers. This campground has sites for tents only. Guests on this 141-acre campground can also stay in no-frills cottages. The campground is located in a forest and has a main pavilion with a bathhouse. The campground has its own fishing pond as well as access to Elks Honey Creek. Numerous hiking trails are located in and around the park. It is open all year and accepts groups.

    High Falls State Park

    • High Falls State Park is located in Jackson, which is approximately 25 minutes north of Covington. It is a large park with 1,050 acres with a 650-acre lake. High Falls State Park has 103 sites that can accommodate both trailers and tents. There are five picnic shelters in the park as well as group shelters and a pool that is privately owned and charges a fee for use. Campers can fish and boat on the lake. The park has two boat ramps and a boat rental. Hiking trails can also be found in the park.
