Campgrounds Near Lake Chatuge, Georgia

Lake Chatuge is a man-made body of water created from Tennessee's dammed Hiawassee River. The lake is a centralized recreational site for explorers of both the Nanthahala National Forest of southwestern North Carolina and the Chattahoochee National Forest of northern Georgia. Visitors can fish, boat, swim and enjoy the beaches. Campgrounds near the lake offer views of the water, often with just a short walk to the beach, while still having the backdrop of quiet woods for a peaceful retreat.
  1. Chatuge Woods

    • Chatuge Woods is located on the southwestern boundary of Lake Chatuge and is owned by Towns County Georgia. The 110 RV campsites, more than half located at the waterfront, are available on a first-come first-served basis at monthly rental rates. Each site has water and electric hook-ups and has its own picnic table. Chatuge Woods has community bathhouses, and large picnic pavilion, and public boating access. The campground is open between April and late October, however RV-owners can also pay to store the vehicles at the campground over winter.

    Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds

    • The Georgia Mountain Fair is an annual agricultural showcase and music festival located in Hiawassee at the southeastern Chatuge Lake area. In addition to hosting the fair, the venue also has a campground with 189 tent camping and RV sites available for daily, weekly, and monthly rental. One area is open between April and October and the other area is open year-round. All sites have water, electricity, wireless Internet access, and cable television available for those who would use them. Sites in Area II are more deluxe being paved and having sewer hook-ups. Tent camping is only allowed in Area I. Campground amenities include playgrounds, tennis courts and a rhododendron garden that is free to access.

    Jackrabbit Mountain

    • Located on the North Carolina side of the lake near Hayesville, Jackrabbit Mountain is a part of the Nantahala National Forest managed by the USDA Forest Service. The campground is open between May 1 and September 29 and all 101 sites require reservations two days in advance. Some sites are lakefront while others are in more wooded areas. The campground provides easy access to the lake's beach. The campground will accommodate small passenger vehicles with trailers for tent campers and RVs with pads up to 128 feet long. There are no hook-ups for electricity or water. Sites have grills, picnic tables and lantern hangers. Flush toilets and hot showers are available.
