Tennessee Valley Authority Campgrounds

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), a federally owned corporation, operates nearly 100 recreational areas, including some of the Southeast's finest campgrounds. From hiking to 60-foot waterfalls to dropping a fishing line in a serene lake, the TVA's campgrounds offer an endless array of recreational activities. For 2010, campgrounds are open from March 19 until late fall. Fees are $16 for no hookups, $20 for electric and water hookups, and $24 for electric, water and sewer services. Reservations are recommended, especially during the busy summer months.
  1. Cherokee Reservoir

    • A few miles from Jefferson City, Tenn., the self-service Cherokee Dam campground has a beach, boat ramps, river and lake fishing, hiking trails and a children's playground. All 42 campsites have full hookups, hot showers and a dump station.

    Douglas Reservoir

    • The Douglas Dam Headwater and Douglas Dam Tailwater campgrounds, located near Gatlingburg, Tenn., offers over 120 campsites. The Douglas Reservoir also incorporates the Trotter Bluff Small Wild Area, featuring numerous hiking trails with incredible vistas. Both campgrounds have full hookups, hot water, dump station and are handicap-accessible. Activities include boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, children's playground and wildlife viewing.

    Foster Falls

    • Hiking to Foster Falls, a 60-foot waterfall, is one of the many recreational opportunities at Foster Falls campground, 5 miles from Trace City, Tenn. Its 26 sites, hot showers, numerous trails and picnic tables are surrounded by more than 170 acres of protected forest. The campground and one trail are handicap-accessible.

    Melton Hill Reservoir

    • A splendid 57-site campground, Melton Hill Dam offers swimming, fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing and a boat ramp. The campground offers sites with full hookups and more primitive sites that are tent-only. The campground's public facilities include hot showers, a dump station and a recreation court.

    Normandy Reservoir

    • Three miles from Normandy, Tenn., the Barton Springs campground at the Normandy Reservoir has 67 sites, most with full hookups. The peaceful surroundings include swimming, fishing, a boat ramp and a fishing pier.

    Norris Reservoir

    • Loyston Point campground, incorporated in the Hemlock Bluff National Recreation Trail, maintains 64 sites near Norris, Tenn. The main attraction is a 7-mile loop trail that winds along the reservoir. The campground has hot water, dump station, swimming, fishing, a boat ramp and outstanding hiking opportunities.

    Watauga Reservoir

    • The famous Appalachian Trail slices through the Watauga Dam Tailwater campground. A nature-lover's dream, this campground has hiking and walking trails as well as river and lake fishing. Facilities include hot showers, a dump station, boat and canoe launches and picnic tables.

    • Near Decatur, Ala., the Mallard Creek campground at Wheeler Reservoir has 56 sites, hot showers, dump station, children's playground, boat ramp, fishing, hiking and swimming access.

    Wilson Reservoir

    • The Wilson Dam-Lower Rockpile campground in Muscle Shoals, Ala. has 23 sites, hot showers, fishing, hiking, swimming, a boat ramp and biking trails. The 25-acre Old First Quarters Small Wild Area affords excellent wildlife viewing.
