Campgrounds in Kennicott, Alaska

The Wrangell-St. Elias National Park is the largest park in the United States, and is home to the largest collection of glaciers and the highest number of mountain peaks in North America. The abandoned mining town of Kennicott is located within the park's boundaries. Kennicott has preserved the mines and historic buildings and has become a tourist destination. Other activities in the area include glacier hiking and ice climbing. Kennicott is accessible by the unpaved McCarthy Road or by air.
  1. Glacier View Campground

    • The Glacier View Campground is located approximately four miles south of Kennicott, and offers visitors a range of accommodations to select from, including a cabin, campsites and RV parking. All tent or RV campsites at Glacier View cost $20 a night. The secluded cabin, located at the base of Firewood Mountain with incredible views of snowcapped mountains and nearby lakes, has one queen-size bed and three air mattresses. The cabin rents for $85 a night. Amenities at the campground include showers, a camp store and bike rental. The one on-site restaurant serves burgers, pizza, grilled meats and an array of beverages. Pets are welcome in the campsites at the Glacier View Campground.

    Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

    • The national park around Kennicott, Wrangell-St. Elias, allows for camping throughout its acreage. There are no official campgrounds located in the park but unofficial campsites can be found along McCarthy Road and at a larger campsite where McCarthy Road dead-ends at the Kennicott River. There are 10 cabins inside the park that are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each cabin includes a wood stove and bunk.

    Lancaster's Backpacker Hotel

    • This no-frills hotel is located approximately four miles from Kennicott, and offers simple bunk bed rooms with few amenities. The hotel provides a shared bathroom and shower area. Guests should bring sleeping bags with them, but the hotel can supply linens for an additional fee. The hotel has 10 rooms available, one a private room and several that can sleep up to four occupants. Amenities at the hotel include Internet access, laundry service and a small store.

    The Fishing Widow

    • Less than 40 miles from Kennicott sits the Fishing Widow campground, located at the Dry Creek State Recreation Site. With over 350 acres, the campground offers 50 campsites and RV sites. At Dry Creek, visitors can enjoy hiking and fishing. The campground offers picnic sites, potable water and toilets, and is accessible to the physically challenged.
