Tent Campgrounds in Alaska

Alaska is a sprawling, spectacular state with a lot to see and do. Accommodation can sometimes be difficult to come by, but for the more rugged and adventurous travelers, tent camping is not difficult to come by. Whether you wish to spend some time in Denali National Park, or in one of Alaska's few urban centers, you should be able to find affordable and enjoyable tent camping sites no matter where you go in Alaska.
  1. McKinley RV & Campground

    • The McKinley RV & Campground is located in Healy, just outside of Denali National Park. The campground is located near the main Park Road and operates a free shuttle into the park. The campground is located about 10 miles away from the park, and offers over 70 sites for both RVs and tents.

    Eklutna Lake Campground

    • The Eklutna Lake Campgrund is located 25 minutes from Anchorage. It has 45 sites, plus picnic tables, two picnic shelters, fire pits, water, latrines and a ranger station. The campground also operates an overflow camping area of 15 sites in case the primary campground fills up. A campground host is also present at the campground most of the time. Campers can stay at this campground for a maximum of 15 days.

    Red Squirrel Campground

    • The Red Squirrel Campground is located outside of Fairbanks, at mile 43 of Chena Hot Springs Road, which runs between Fairbanks and the Chena Hot Springs Resort. This campground offers 12 sites that are very inexpensive, with many hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities nearby.

    Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Area

    • About 10 miles outside of the Southeast Alaskan town of Haines, Alaska, is the Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site, which offers 80 campsites to its guests. It is located near the outlet of the Chilkoot River, about 5 minutes away from the local ferry terminal.

    Seward Parks & Recreation

    • In the south central part of Alaska is the town of Seward, which has its own Parks & Recreation Department that operates campgrounds throughout the town. Over 500 sites are available within and outside the Seward city limits in several different campground, including William's Park, Forest Acres Campground and Spring Creek Campground. These campgrounds are first-come, first-served, and work by way of self-registration.
