Campgrounds Near Kennecott Mines in Alaska

At the end of Alaska's gravel McCarthy Road lie the historic mining towns of Kennicott and McCarthy. Both towns are actually across a foot bridge that crosses the Kennicott river and cannot be accessed by car. The Kennecott mine and old town site are located inside the Wrangell-Elias National Park. The mine itself is spelled Kennecott with an E instead of an I, although the surrounding area and river are spelled Kennicott. Many arguments about the origins of this misspelling are well known in the area. When traveling to McCarthy and Kennicott, there are two private campgrounds before the bridge, as well as NPS campgrounds once you are in the park itself.

    • The Tram Station is a campground located at the end of the McCarthy road, before the footbridge. There are 29 tent or RV spots in a wooded area with outhouses and drinking water. A van shuttle into McCarthy and Kennicott is available. The Tram Station provides emergency and flat tire vehicle repair. Contact: 907-554-4401.

    Glacier View Campgound
