Campgrounds near Whittier, Alaska

Whittier is a tiny port village in Southeast Alaska home to under 200 residents. The surrounding area is rich in the kind of natural, rugged beauty that characterizes much of Alaska. Many visitors come to Whittier to enjoy the wilderness through camping, fishing, and hiking. Dozens of campgrounds are located near Whittier, many of which are very isolated and have limited road access.
  1. Whittier, Alaska Public Campground

    • This campground located just off Glacier Avenue in the town of Whittier offers natural scenery in a rugged Alaskan setting. RV hookups and paved road access are not available, but many sites do have picnic tables. Natural attractions, such as mountains, waterfalls and glaciers, are located within walking distance. Some sites offer views of the bay and the town of Whittier from above. This campground is open from May 1 until the end of October.

    South Esther Island State Marine Park

    • This isolated marine park is located just east of Whittier and offers dozens of campsites, toilets, and 3,360 acres of wilderness to explore. There is currently no road access to the park, so to get there you must take a boat from the port in Whittier. South Esther Island State Marine Park is for campers who really want to get away from it all, as there are no permanent human settlements on the island. Here you’ll find many scenic overlooks and untouched bodies of water. The island is also home to an important fish hatchery that attracts families of black bears during the height of the fish run.

    Williwaw Campground

    • This campground is located in the enormous Chugach National Forest between Whittier and Anchorage. Williwaw Campground provides a convenient base for exploring nearby attractions like Portage Glacier, Williwaw Salmon Viewing Area, Byron Glacier, the town of Whittier, and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. The nearby Portage Glacier Lodge, which offers an affordable menu of fresh fish and other regional delicacies, can be reached by hiking the four-mile Trail of Blue Ice from Williwaw. Campsites are spacious and well separated from each other, allowing for plenty of privacy. However, facilities are limited and there are no RV hookups. Practice good bear safety measures when preparing and storing food.
