Anchorage, Alaska, Public Campgrounds

Anchorage, Alaska, may be the largest city in the state, but it's still possible to experience a bit of that famed Alaskan wilderness without venturing too far from town. There is one campground within the Municipality of Anchorage and a few more just a few miles down the road. Many Alaskan campgrounds are open seasonally, so make sure to check before you go.
  1. Centennial Campground

    • Centennial Campground is a 15-minute drive from downtown Anchorage. Located within Centennial Park, the campground is open for camping Thursday through Sunday, from May 20 to September 8. Current rates are $25 per night. There are 100 sites to choose from. Two group sites and six drive-through sites are available. Centennial Campground makes reservations for caravans only; all other sites are first-come, first-serve. The campground offers hiking trails, biking trails, and restrooms with pay showers.

    Eagle River Campground

    • Located 12 miles north of Anchorage, the Eagle River Campground offers 67 campsites with picnic tables, fire pits, water, restrooms with flush toilets, and a dump station. Nearby activities include hiking trails, fishing, and rafting. Currently, fees are $15 a night. Unlike most other Alaskan campgrounds, Eagle River Campground allows some of its campsites to be reserved up to one year in advance. The campground is open seasonally, from May to September.

    Bird Creek Campground

    • About 20 miles south of Anchorage in Chugach State Park, the Bird Creek Campground offers 28 sites with picnic tables, fire pits, water, and restrooms. The campground is close to the Bird Creek Trail head, a 15-mile trail that leads up the valley to amazing views of the inlet. Bird Creek Campground does not accept reservations.

    Eklutna Lake Campground

    • About 30 miles north of Anchorage, the Eklutna Lake Campground offers 60 sites with picnic tables, fire pits, water, restrooms, a rental cabin, and a ranger station. An overflow camping area consists of 15 sites. Recreational opportunities include trails for hiking, ATVs, biking, horseback riding, boating, fishing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Current fees are $10 per night.

    Black Bear Campground

    • Black Bear Campground is a U.S. Forest Service campground near Explorer Glacier, about 40 miles south of Anchorage. The campsite offers 11 heavily forested sites, all with fire pits and tables. Water is available through a hand pump. There are no flush toilets. All sites have small parking spaces, which makes this campground more appropriate for tent camping than RV camping. Black Bear is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year. Current fees are $14 per day. Recreational opportunities include wildlife viewing and hiking.
