Identify which European country will be your main destination or first point of entry. You must apply to the embassy of the country where you will spend the greatest amount of time, or, if you are traveling between several countries, the embassy of the nation at which you first arrive.
Fill out the visa application form available on the websites of European embassies and consulates in the U.S. The form must be filled out in English or the official language of the relevant country.
Schedule an appointment -- if required -- at the embassy or consulate with jurisdiction for your area. Some countries allow you to turn up at their visa processing offices without an appointment.
Gather together all the additional documentation required under Schengen legislation. The documents, which are listed in the "Things You'll Need" section on this page, must be supplied in their original form and include one copy.
Visit the embassy or consulate where your wish to apply and pay the relevant visa processing fee in cash or by money order. Leave your passport and documentation with embassy staff for processing, this may take between 24 hours and several weeks.
Check your visa and passport carefully when it arrives. If there are errors with your name or dates, or if there is any damage, notify the issuing authority as soon as possible.
