Subsidized housing is a government-funded program administered through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. It is available in every state for low income, disabled and elderly individuals or families who need assistance with housing. Individuals who meet the income and citizenship requirements can apply directly with the low-income housing locations in Tucson, Arizona. However, because of the popularity of the subsidized housing program, the wait for an apartment may be long.
Contact HUD at 800-955-2232 and request a subsidized housing list for Tucson, Arizona, or print out the listing on the HUD website.
Look through the listing and select the properties in the area where you would like to move. Contact the management office and inquire about its subsidized housing or Section 8 voucher program, which provides rent assistance for private housing. Ask the receptionist for an application and if there is a waiting list. In some cases, you may be required to visit the office to complete the application. If there is a waiting list, your name may be added over the phone. In some cases, the office will mail you an application.
Complete the application using blue or black ink and return it to the management office. The management office will add your name to the waiting list and issue you an applicant number. Once your number and name reaches the top of the list, you will be contacted to schedule an appointment for an interview.
Gather all of your documents to verify your eligibility for the program. You will need to provide proof of all the income in your household, citizenship and family composition. You also will need to bring your birth certificate and Social Security or green card for yourself and everyone else under the age of 18 that resides in your household. Anyone older than 18 will need to be present at the time of the interview.
Contact the management office and schedule the intake interview. At the interview, you will sit down with a housing representative and provide your documentation. The representative will ask you questions regarding your income and household size. Once you are found eligible for the program, the representative will schedule a walk through of the unit. Your rent amount will be determined and is usually 30 percent of your income. You must pay your security deposit and sign your lease. Once the documents are returned to the office, you can move into the unit.
