How to Obtain a Visitor's Visa to Canada

According to the Citizenship and Immigration Service of Canada, more than 5 million people visit Canada per year. U.S. citizens do not need a visa to visit Canada. If you require a visa, your reason for entering Canada will determine which visa you'll need. If you plan to visit Canada for only a short time, you will need a Temporary Resident Visa.

Download and print the Temporary Resident Visa application from the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.

Gather supporting documentation for application. You need two passport photos, a filing fee of $75, and proof that you have enough funds to visit Canada--for example, a bank statement. You may need other documentation if the Citizenship and Immigration Canada office requests it.

    • 3

Mail application and all supporting documentation to the Canadian visa office where you reside.

Pass medical evaluation. If you are planning to stay in Canada for more than six months, you will be required to have a medical evaluation.

    • 6

Get approved. If your application is approved, your visa will be mailed to you. Processing a visa usually takes one month or less.
