Cheap Campgrounds in Michigan

Michigan consists of Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Both parts of the state have numerous lakes and rivers, offering visitors the chance to hunt, canoe, hike, fish, snowmobile and ski. Stay at an inexpensive campground in either part of Michigan while you enjoy the many outdoor activities.
  1. West Houghton Lake Campground

    • West Houghton Lake Campground has 128 campsites on Houghton Lake in Northern Michigan and is open all year. The campground amenities include a camp store, volleyball and basketball court, walking trails, game room, laundry room, showers, street golf, wireless Internet, shuffleboard and horseshoes. Hiking, fishing, boating and swimming are just some of the activities to do when camping at West Houghton Lake Campground. The campground has a 35-foot camper that sleeps six to eight people for rent at $65 a night. The nightly rate for a site with electric and water is $30 for campers and tent camping sites are $20 a night. Cabin rentals are $50 a night as of 2010.

    Big Cedar Campground

    • Big Cedar Campground is located northwest of Mackinac Bridge in the Upper Peninsula. The campground is near Seney National Wildlife Refuge on the shores of the Manistique River. There are 50 campsites for RVs, campers and tents. Big Cedar opens on May 1 and closes on October 1. The family-friendly campground has a playground, charcoal grill at the pavilion, badminton, basketball and horseshoe courts and hunting and fishing opportunities. There are full hookup sites, a laundry room, showers and flush toilets. Tent sites with electric and water are $18 a night. Campsites for campers or RVs are $22 a night for electric and water, and $26 a night for full hookups with electric, water and sewer as of 2010. Restaurants and grocery store are seven miles away in Seney or Germfask.

    Fisherman's Island State Park

    • Fisherman's Island State Park has 81 campsites with no hookups. The rustic campground has no showers or fancy amenities; it is a campground that lets you get back to the basics. There is a vaulted toilet, cross-country skiing, hunting, swimming and hiking on Fisherman's Island foot trail, which is three miles long. The park is situated on the shores of Lake Michigan south of Charlevoix, Michigan. Fisherman's is open all year. The cost per night is $15 as of 2010.
