Arizona Tent Campgrounds

Camping parks abound in Arizona, where droves of vacationers come to get close to nature. Some care to get closer than others, choosing tent camping and roughing it as their choice of adventure as opposed to recreational vehicles. National, local and commercial parks fulfill the needs of tent campers by providing campsites in various levels of improvements. Tent campers often share their grounds with RVs but they have options in some areas for back country camping away from other campers.
  1. Mather Campground

    • Mather Campground on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park is open all year. The campground takes reservations from the first of March until the middle of November, but not during the winter months. The camp welcomes pets but they must be restrained. There are places that pets are not allowed, but the nearby village has a kennel where you may board your pet while you visit these places. The campsites have restroom, shower and laundry facilities. You may only build fires in the grills that are in the park. Free buses transport visitors to nearby places of interest including the Visitor Center and several stores and restaurants.

    Lake Pleasant

    • Lake Pleasant, near Phoenix in Maricopa County, divides its recreational areas into two distinct camps: Roadrunner at the top of the hill and Desert Tortoise next to the water. The tent-only sites are off-road but near the water. Tent campers can choose from those sites or stay in the more developed sites. Bathroom and shower facilities dot the recreation area. Use the convenient boat ramp and fish to your heart's content out on the stocked lake. Lake Pleasant is true wilderness, but shopping and big-city amenities can be found in Phoenix, just over 15 miles away.
