Campgrounds in McGregor, Minnesota

Located in Aitkin County, McGregor, Minnesota is approximately 60 miles west of Duluth and 115 miles north of Minneapolis. The town is popular with tourists due to its proximity to area attractions like the Minnesota National Golf Course, Lake Minnewawa and Rice Lake. Visitors to the McGregor area have a variety of accommodations to choose from, including campgrounds.
  1. Sandy Lake Recreational Area

    • The Sandy Lake Recreation Area is an Army Corps of Engineers public campground. The campground offers eight sites for tenting and 43 spots for recreational vehicles. All of the sites are on gravel and most are located in shade. Five of the spaces are pull-through, sized 35-feet by 65-feet, while the back-ins measure 35-feet by 35 -eet. Electric hookups are available at all sites; there is no sewage hookup, but a waste dump is provided onsite. None of the sites feature water connections. The campground provides restrooms, showers and laundry facilities as well as a public phone and firewood. Campers can boat, fish or swim in Big Sandy Lake, which is on the property. A horseshoe pit and playground are also offered for recreation. The park is open from mid-April to mid-October. The maximum length of stays at Sandy Lake is 14 days.

    Savanna Portage State Park

    • A 15,818-acre area, Savanna Portage State Park is a public park with an entrance in McGregor. The park offers spots for cabin rentals, tents and 61 gravel sites for RVs. The majority of the recreational vehicle spots are back-in, sized 12-feet by 55-feet, with the exception of four 12-by 45-feet pull-through sites. Electric hookup is available at only 18 sites in the park. Although there are no water or sewage connections, the campgrond does provide a waste dump, showers and restrooms. A public phone and firewood are also available. Shumway Lake is adjacent to the park's campground and is a popular spot for trout-fishing as well as boating. Hiking and bike trails are located in Savanna Portage as well. Open year-round, the park offers snowmobiling and cross-country skiing tracks for winter recreation. Visitors may only camp at the park for 14 days.

    Larson's Barn

    • In addition to its cabin and lodge facilities, Larson's Barn provides spaces for tenting and recreational vehicles. All sites have electric hookup. The camp offers special packages with the Minnesota National Golf Course, which is less than one mile away. There are no restrooms or showers onsite. Larson's Barn is home to a number of special events throughout the year, including jazz concerts, arts festivals and polka dances. Campers can walk from sites to the festivities.
